Sensitive or sore gums can manifest themselves in several ways so it’s important to know the signs and be able to recognize when you need to call your doctor or dentist. What causes sore and sensitive gums?
Swelling, tenderness, and redness are often signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Gingivitis is the earliest and mildest form of gum disease. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to more serious forms of gum disease, like periodontal disease.
While stages of gum disease can often be the culprit, those aren’t the only oral health conditions that can cause gum sensitivity. Some of the other most common causes of gum sensitivity and soreness include brushing too hard, improper or lack of flossing, hormonal changes, and other health conditions. Smoking has also been found to damage your gums leading to sensitivity.
One cause of gum soreness and sensitivity that often surprises people is stress. Too much stress can lead to a variety of oral health issues including teeth grinding, canker sores, and TMJ disorder in addition to gum sensitivity.
Sensitive Gum Treatment & Prevention
The easiest way to prevent gum sensitivity is through good oral health practices. Make sure you’re properly brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, avoiding foods with high acidic content, and seeing your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups.
